webOS hacker gets Doom to play on the Palm PreWith its  latest firmware update to webOS 1.3.5, Palm included a software library called SDL (or Simple Directmedia Layer) which grants low level hardware access to developers – which is perfect for accelerated 3D graphics.

Super-spoddy webOS hacker zsoc was quick to see the potential, and swiftly put  together a working port of the legendary shoot em up Doom, which runs within a card in Palm’s multi-tasking webOS.

Arise Sir Capt. Jean-Luc Picard! He’s an incredibly versatile actor who has mastered the Shakespearian classics and played a vast array of roles on stage and screen, but the 69-year-old Yorkshire actor Patrick Stewart is perhaps best celebrated for his role as Capt. Jean-Luc Picard in the ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ series.

In a move sure to please Trekker fans, Stewart will soon be upgraded from a Starfleet captain to a ‘Sir’ as he’s just  been awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours List.

Online video: Surprised Kitten pwns Michael Jackson We’ve already published YouTube’s list of their most watched videos of 2009, but social bookmarking site AddThis has chipped in with their own list of their most-shared articles from sites using their service.

Their listing shows something called ‘Santa Yourself’ at the top of the list (sorry, but we couldn’t be bothered to look it up), followed by a thigh-slapping musical rendition of a thunderstorm from the  Kim Komando Show (whatever that is).

Palm app store edges towards 1,000 apps. UK users left out in the coldTheir App Catalog is still trailing a considerable distance behind Apple’s bulging App Store, but US Palm Pre and Pixi users should soon have over a thousand apps to download on to their devices.

If you include the 380+ apps bubbling away in the HomeBrew community, it all points to healthy growth for Palm’s innovative webOS operating system.

Nokia vs Apple - the patent war heats up as Nokia counter-countersues!

We reported back in October that the Finnish mobile giant was suing its rival Apple for infringing their mobile phone technology patents with the iPhone, and things seem to be heating up to a true Battle Royale.

Apple slammed Nokia’s claim right back into their quid pro quos, swiftly firing off a countersuit claiming that Nokia was infringing 13 of their patents.

Google Goggles image recognition mobile search tool: video demoGoogle’s futuristic mobile image recognition  feature — Google Goggles — has been demoed on the Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10.

Although the Xperia is yet to be released, you can see the impressive technology in action, with the phone’s camera being used to scan an object and return search results based on what it can ‘see.’

Carphone offers free flights for Palm Pre buyersRumoured to be in response to poor sales, the Carphone Warehouse is giving away two free airline tickets to anyone who buys a Palm Pre before the end of January.

Although the Palm Pre won widespread rave reviews, with many declaring it to be a worthy challenger to the iPhone, sales have apparently failed to match up to expectations.

We can’t say we’re that surprised, to be honest.
