If you’ve ever had that sinking feeling at the end of a long night when you discover your precious iPhone has iLegged it somewhere, then Apple’s new Find My iPhone app could be just the ticket.

The free app – currently available on the iTunes App Store – will locate your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch should it slip down the back of a sofa or be purloined by a sneaky ne’er do well.

Grab a friend

Naturally, the app’s going to be a fat lot of use if it’s only installed on your stolen iPhone, so you’ll need to grab a chum with an iPhone, install the app on their handset and then swiftly log in with your MobileMe account.

If all goes to plan, you should see a tiny beacon of hope flickering on the map displaying the location of your phone.

If it’s around your friend’s house, you can remotely lock the handset and pick it up later, but if it’s on the first train out of town en route to Dodgy Dave The Fence, perhaps it’s best to hit the data wipe option sharpish.

The App can only be installed on iOS 3.1.3 or later devices and is available now for a grand sum of nuppence.

Well, we say free, but you’ll still have to fork out £59 a year MobileME subscription for it to work, which rather takes the shine off the thing.
