Google’s speak-to-tweet service lets internet-starved Egyptians Tweet by phone

Google teams up with Twitter to let Egyptians Tweet by phone

Google have announced on their official Google Blog that they’ve already implemented a new speak-to-tweet service to help internet-starved Egyptians get their message out.

The search engine giant teamed up with engineers from Twitter and SayNow to create a simple speak-to-tweet service for those caught up in the turmoil in Egypt.

Google explained how the new service worked:

It’s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855) and the service will instantly tweet the message using the hashtag #egypt.

No Internet connection is required. People can listen to the messages by dialing the same phone numbers or going to twitter.com/speak2tweet.

We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone there.

Last ISP down

With TechCrunch reporting that Noor Group DSL – the last ISP left standing in Egypt – has now been closed down, Google’s new service may prove an invaluable lifeline to those trapped behind the internet blackout.

Good work, Google.
