Nikon is having another stab at the high-end enthusiast market with the announcement of its first DX-format compact, the Coolpix A, priced at a wallet-draining $1100/£1000/€1100 and available in silver or black.
The Coolpix A hopes to attract interest with the compact camera cognoscenti thanks to its impressive 16MP APS-C CMOS sensor with no optical low-pass filter, which is certainly talking the kind of language we like.
However, things aren’t quite so appealing in the lens department, with the camera sporting a fixed 28mm equivalent prime lens with a rather modest f2.8 aperture.
We know that improved high ISO performance means that it’s not such a big deal, but we would have liked to seen at least a f2 lens on a camera this pricey. That saud, this is a camera capable of taking some great pictures – see the Official Nikon Coolpix A Sample Photos.
The ISO range runs through a workmanlike 100-6400 (with 12,800 and 25,600 equivalent extension settings), and supports up to 4fps continuous shooting.
Movies can be fired off at full HD 1920x1080p (24, 25 or 30fps) with stereo sound, there’s an i-TTL compatible hotshoe, while around the back can be found a 3.0″ 920k dot LCD.

It’s all a bit meh to us
Styled in what appears to be a bit of a half-arsed attempt to look retro, we’re not entirely sure who’d want to buy this camera given its sky-high price.
If we were looking for a pocketable compact with great performance, we’d be waving our wad at the far cheaper Sony RX100 or perhaps consider paying a bit more and get the far more versatile Fuji X-E1.
Its’s not rocking our boat to be honest, but here’s the press release – perhaps you’ll find something exciting that we’re missing from this product.
