Palm’s App Catalog hurtles past 30 million downloads

Palm App Catalog hurtles past 30 million downloadsAfter checking the data in their webOS App Gallery, Palm-lovin’ website PreCentral has calculated that there’s been over thirty million downloads from the App Catalog.

Unlike power-crazed Apple – which retains sole control over app distribution (with a few random bouts of censorship thrown in for good measure)  – Palm allows three ways for users to download apps:

The folks at PreCentral got out their calculators, totted up the totals for the three app distribution models, and arrived at a figure of  33,749,305 downloads.

Palm App Catalog hurtles past 30 million downloadsBut wait – there’s more!

Although that’s a fairly impressive figure, once you add in the 5.8 million downloads from PreCentral’s own Homebrew App Gallery and the many patches and other homebrew apps served up by WebOS Internals via Prewar, the total soars upwards in excess of 40 million.

Of course, with Europe still twiddling their thumbs in expectation of Palm’s paid app catalogue finally rocking into town, that downloading total should explode upwards once it’s made available.

What’s the most popular?

The biggest hitter in the Official App catalog is Pandora, notching up 1.2 million downloads, followed by AccuWeather, Bubbles, Where and the Weather Channel. Check out the full list of most-downloaded apps here.
