Samsung announces the Galaxy S II Plus, full specs released

Keen to squeeze the maximum return from its phenomenally successful Galaxy S2 handset, Samsung has now officially announced the Galaxy S II Plus.

Running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and packing Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, the S2 Plus comes with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with a resolution of 480 x 800, while inside can be found  a dual-core 1.2GHz processor.

There’s also a reasonable 1GB of RAM onboard plus a microSD card slot and 8GB of internal storage.

Powered by a 1650 mAh battery, photo options come in the shape of a 2 megapixel front-facing camera and 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, while GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 3.0 are all present and correct.

The Galaxy S II Plus will be available in two flavours – with or without NFC, while connectivity options include  3G HSPA+ (21Mbps) on the 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100MHz bands and GSM on the 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz bands.

Updated Samsung apps

The handset will come pre-installed (some may say burdened) with the usual slew of Samsung proprietary apps, although there are some neat new goodies on-board.

Included in the handset is the Direct Call feature allows users to automatically dial a call by placing the phone next to their ear, and the clever Smart Stay controls the display by checking to see if a user is looking at the screen or not.

Smart Alert notifies users of missed events or status updates when they pick up the phone and the rather excellent Popup Video feature lets users watch a video anywhere on the screen in a resizable window. S

The new S2 Plus measures up at  125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm, and weighs 121 grams. The NFC version will be a badger’s nadger thicker at 8.9mm.

Sadly, the all-important pricing and availability has yet to be unveiled, but we’re thinking it’s going to be priced at the lower/mid end of the market.
