Soluto “anti-frustration software” promises a leaner, speedier PC

Soluto

If your PC is taking so long to boot that you’ve got time to pop out for a pint and a pasty before getting to the log in screen, an intriguing new product called Soluto could be a Godsend.

Once installed, the software analyses your machine’s startup, and shows you which applications are slowing down the boot up process, and offers fixes via an impressively slick interface.

Here’s how they describe their beta software:

Soluto Beta allows you to understand your boot, discover which applications are slowing it down (and keep running later in the background, affecting your ongoing experience), and allows you to significantly improve it. While Soluto Beta focuses on the boot, it already researches for frustrations and helps map the PC Genome, and allows you to share your wisdom with others.

Slap down the hogs

Start up programs are laid out in three colour coded strips showing you programs that are safe to remove from start-up, ones requiring a bit of techie knowledge and ones that can’t be removed because they’re essental to the operating system.

Clicking on each item gives information about the app and the time it’s currently hogging on start up.

Soluto gives you the option to pause the slovenly app, or allow it to start up after your PC has booted and when your machine is idle.

Your PC’s start up times are tracked over time so you can see if a certain application is slowing things down and elect to boot it off the, err, boot up.

Sorting out frustrations

Soluto can also be called up when your computer ‘annoys’ you (i.e a printer stops working or a program freezes), and try to work out and which application is causing the problem, with the company’s PCGenome project using crowd-sourced info to suggest solutions.

We’re finding this a fascinating project and will definitely be trialling it on our machines.
