Sony introduces the 'world's first HDTV powered by Google TV'

Sony has hooked up with Google to create a range of Internet-connected TVs capable of serving up multiple content sources –  from traditional TV broadcasts to streaming web video – via a simple interface.

Android-based

Built on the Android platform and running an Intel Atom processor, Sony Internet TV is powered by Google TV,  runs the  Google Chrome browser and lets users quickly search across Internet and television content.

Coming with a high tech mini-keyboard remote, Sony’s range of four new connected TVs offer screen sizes from 26 to 46 inches and all come equipped with Google Services and Internet connectivity.

The QWERTY keypad remote packs an optical mouse or users can control the Wi-Fi enabled TVs via a soon-come app on their Android phones.

“Sony Internet TV is the world’s first HDTV that combines the big-screen impact of television and full Internet search to deliver an unrivaled entertainment experience,” said Mike Abary, senior vice president of Sony’s Home Division. “Finally, you can seamlessly search your favorite TV programs and web sites on the same screen, at the same time.”

Networked up

Social networking addicts will enjoy the Dual View feature, which lets users watch television while frantically tweeting about what they’re seeing.

Hyperactive viewers with low attention disorders can also mess about on the web while watching TV programmes.

Pre-installed apps

The Sony TVs come with CNBC, Napster, NBA, Netflix, Pandora, Twitter, and YouTube pre-installed (with access to the Android Market coming in early 2011).

Priced from $599 to $1399, the TVs are available for pre-order now, on will be hitting the Sony Style stores in the US this weekend, and Best Buy on October 24th.

Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Player

There’s also a $399.99 Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Player NSZ-GT1 available in October whoch comes with built in Google TV built-in, television & Internet searching, Dual View and, of course, Blu-ray Disc playback capability.

The unit packs built-in Wi-Fi, plus one HDMI input, one HDMI output and four USB inputs taking care of connectivity.

    Thats about £250 at current exchange rates. A tempting proposition IF (and it’s a big if) they can hit that price point in the UK.
