Google Artist Hub empowers indie bands, fills some of the MySpace-sized hole

Although we’re not so convinced about the new Google Music‘s prospects for taking on the all-conquering iTunes, we think Google could be on to a winner with its new Artist Hub Service.

In fact, we think it’s one area where they could absolutely trounce Apple – and if the new bands start to make this a central part of their online activity, then it could well influence people to switch to Google Music in the long-term.

MySpace goes for a song, Justin Timberlake takes ownership stake

After what seemed like a never-ending tailspin into obscurity, hope may burn bright once again for the beleaguered former social networking heavyweight, MySpace.

Bought up for $580 million by News Corp in 2005, the site underwent a series of catastrophic updates, pointless redesigns and calamitous refreshes, which left users jettisoning the fast-sinking ship at an extreme rate of knots.

MySpace: the bidding begins on the flabby, faltering, failed music site

Jettisoning users quicker than the LibDems are losing voters, MySpace was once a fantastic resource for bands, fans and promoters.

Its appeal was fairly simple: it provided an easy way for music lovers to check out new bands, it was a great for bands to keep in touch with their fans (and vice versa), and for the music industry it proved a  great place to check out upcoming new acts. We loved it.

MySpace web traffic collapses

Recent figures show MySpace’s decline in freefall, with the once-don of social networking sites rapidly shedding value and losing hundreds of millions for its parent company, News Corp.

Numbers released by web analytics firm Compete.com make uncomfortable reading for Murdoch and Co, with US traffic spiralling in a downwards direction from 55.6 million unique visitors in August to 50.2 million in September.
