Apple iPhone4 coming to 3 in UK, tariffs announced

Apple’s  iPhone 4 is set to shimmy on to the 3 network next month, with most of the tariff prices being announced.

The iconic but glitch-burdened handset will be available by the end of July, with the 16GB Apple iPhone 4 offered  free for users taking out a pricey £45-per-month contract for a lengthy two years.

The deal gives users 2,000 free  minutes, as well as 5,000 minutes to call others on the 3 network, plus 5,000 texts and a data allowance of 1GB.

32GB for £89

The 32GB version can be bagged for an additional £89, while their cheapest iPhone 4 tariff costs £30 per month and offers users 500 minutes of calls, 5,000 minutes of 3 to 3 calls, 500 texts and the same rather stingy 1GB data allowance ,

The network say that they’ve also got a £25-per month tariff up its sleeve but has yet to furnish us with details of the calling and text allowances on this contract, or the handset price.

Kevin’s chuffed

Kevin Rusell, CEO at 3 seemed suitably chuffed with their offering:

This is a big deal for us – we’ve got to go head to head with other networks [on smartphones] and not having the iPhone is like having one hand tied behind our backs, with us missing a key weapon.

Having the iPhone is a significant step forward for us, and we really want to push forward with this device over the next six months.

FaceTime fail

Russell reckons FaceTime- the iPhone’s built in video calling service – is unlikely to prove a hit saying he  he “would be surprised” if it takes off.

Marc Allera, sales and marketing director for Three, was ready and willing to get head nodding with the boss:
“In places like Italy, where they’re less reserved about video calling from the beach or somewhere like that, it may be a different story – but in the UK we’re culturally very different, so I can’t see it being a big thing.”

We tend to agree too, although we could maybe think of the very odd occasion where we might fancy making such a call – assuming that (a) we’re on a wi-fi connection (b) the person we want to call is on a wi-fi connection and (c) we’ve both got iPhone 4s.

So, not very likely then.
