iPhone micro-SIM won’t work with Apple’s iPad

Apple fans hooked up with all the company’s latest shiny gadgets will be disappointed to learn that the new micro-SIM cards are not interchangeable – so anyone hoping to swap SIM cards between their new iPhone 4 and iPad is going to be out of luck.

The limitation was revealed on Apple’s FAQ pages, where the company laid down the bad news:

“Are iPhone 4 and iPad micro-SIM cards interchangeable? No. Your iPad micro-SIM card will not work with your iPhone.”

No swapping of data

No doubt this will come as something of a blow for Apple aficionados looking for the convenience of swapping SIM cards when it suits and it also puts the kibosh on any notion of using up the spare data allowance from one device on the other.

Here’s o2’s spokesperson to explain why card swapping is a no-no:

Both use a mini-SIM, but the iPad micro-SIM is not, for example, provisioned for voice, and focuses on flexible data. The micro-SIM for the iPhone is set up for voice and other functionality.
