Barnes & Noble slashes Nook eReader pricing as competition rises

Against a backdrop of soaraway Google Nexus 7 tablet sales and growing rumours of the impending release of an updated suite of Amazon Kindle eReaders, Barnes & Noble have slashed the prices of two of its popular Nook eReader models.

The company has announced that both its Nook Color and Nook Tablet will see substantial price cuts, and will be offered at a competitive $149 and $179, respectively.

“Our Reader’s Tablets have consistently been the highest rated products by the leading technology experts and now they’re available for the lowest prices ever,” insisted Jamie Iannone, President of Digital Products at Barnes & Noble.

“With NOOK Color for $149 and NOOK Tablet starting at $179, customers can enjoy our best-in-class digital reading and entertainment experience with an expansive selection of digital content and apps at an unbeatable price.”

The Nook’s biggest competitor is the Amazon Kindle Fire and a sharply priced product refresh could put pressure on Barnes and Noble – and then there’s the bargain-priced power of the Google Nexus 7 to contend with, which provides a slick user experience at an astonishingly low price.
