We’ve been darkly fascinated by the robotic developments from the Boston Dynamic boffins, with their videos of Big Dog being sufficient to spawn several nightmares.

The last time we saw Big Dog it had developed a sinister rock throwing arm, but now a smaller, leaner version called Spot can be seen autonomously scuttling through woods.

The smaller version weighs just 160 pounds and looks a lot more agile, and comes with the ability to safely operate both indoors and out. So it may be shuffling along an alley near you one day.

Beating inside its cold interior is a set of hydraulic actuators and built-in sensors allowing it to automatically navigate tricky looking terrain.

The technology is clearly nothing short of incredible but  it still leaves us feeling slightly unsettled.
