Such is the dominance of the all devouring monster that is Facebook, the social networking site now accounts for nearly a quarter of all page views in the US.

According to data from Hitwise, Facebook is scooping up 24.27 per cent of all US page views, and has now overtaken Google to become the largest website in the U.S.

The market share of page views for Facebook.com is now nearly four times the volume of the second ranked website YouTube.com, with just 6.93 per cent, while Google sits in third place with 5.32 per cent.

Facebook is also the most visited website in the U.S. with 10.29 per cent  of all U.S. visits, followed by Google with 7.21 per cent.

Hitwise says that visits to Facebook have increased by 60% from the same week a year ago, which represents an almost terrifying rise in traffic.

Is Facebook  going to take over the world? And is that a good thing?

(*Note: this study doesn’t include visits from outside the U.S. and excludes mobile traffic).
