What's the most used data service in the world? You might find the answer surprising

No, it’s not email, Facebook or even Twitter. It’s actually good ol’ SMS text messaging.

There’s over 4.2 billion people texting worldwide, with 6.1 trillion SMS messages sent in 2010 – working out at 193,430 texts per second.

And that’s a lorra lorra data.

After questioning 500 US teens via social networking sites, online consumer market research bods lab42 discovered that 71 per cent of respondents apparently preferred texting to phone calling.

o2 team up with Starbucks and L’Oreal for location based SMS vouchers

We can’t think of many things more annoying  than being bothered by SMS messages offering us discounts for hair products or distinctly average coffee, but a breakthrough deal sees UK network provider O2 partnering up with location services platform Placecast to deliver targeted SMS and MMS messages.

We’re typing this using CreaWriter, a free Windows text editor designed to “increase your productivity and creativity” by decluttering your screen and covering up your endless flashing widgets, Twitter feeds and IM distractions.

Opening up to fill your screen with a suitably soothing sunset image, the minimalist interface aims to serve up a distraction free environment, with only the orangey sunset hues and the sound of gently trickling water for company.

US: 4.1 billion SMS messages being sent dailyThe latest CTIA wireless industry survey has just been released, and it reveals the continuing runaway growth of text messaging in America.

According to the survey, over 740 billion text messages were sent over carrier networks in the US in the first six months of 2009.

EditPlus Text/HTML Editor v3.11 Review

If you’re getting mighty miffed by having to do battle with basic Notepad application that ships with Windows whenever you’re looking to do some serious text/code editing, then, EditPlus for Windows could be worth a look.

It’s been our numero uno choice for writing stories for this website for some years now, replacing the bloat of Windows Word while still offering enough tools and features to keep things moving along speedily.

The program offers a tabbed, multiple document interface with window splitting and spell checking, plus find and replace and case conversion.

Although it lacks some of the smartypants features seen in fully featured writing programs like Word (there’s no grammar checker to be seen, for example), we found the lack of distracting glitz and gizmos helped us concentrate on the writing.
