The endless glory (and inevitable disappointment for England fans) of the World Cup is almost upon us, and Twitter are looking to be in the centre of it all.

Ever-keen to keep their traffic figures accelerating upwards, the microblogging service has launched a comprehensive and rather stylish homepage for football fans.

Situated at twitter.com/worldcup, the site serves up a feast of dedicated gateways to news and tweets about the 32 participating countries with a “What’s Happening?” bar on the top taking you to live updates and tweets from live games.

International perspective

Twitter cofounder Biz Stone moved swifter than a Brazilian forward to big up his company’s  “rapid international growth” and  tell the word that 60 percent of Twitter users come from outside the US.

Keep it tight at the back and hoof it up the park

At the bottom of the main landing page, are links to ‘Top Tweets’ which claims to “algorithmically select the most interesting tweets about the World Cup,” and there’s also a handy  ‘staff picks’ selection, listing World Cup tweets from around 150 players, journalists, organisations, and football related sites.

We particularly like the “hashflags” feature which lets users add a miniature flag of their country next to their post by inserting the appropriate hashtag: e.g. #usa, #mex, or #bra.

Shame there’s no ‘Wales’ one on offer.
