Palm Pre gets Sims 3, Need For Speed and other graphics-intensive games

The Palm Pre is likely to look a whole load more tempting to consumers from today with the introduction of a slew of top notch, class leading games to the webOS platform.

No less than seven popular 3D games are charging headlong into the Palm App Catalog, and they’re all worthy downloads:

Need for Speed Undercover (EA Mobile)
The Sims 3 (EA Mobile)
MONOPOLY (EA Mobile)
Asphalt 5: Elite Racing (Gameloft)
Let’s Golf! (Gameloft)
Glyder 2 (Glu Mobile)
X-Plane (Laminar Research)

Also nudging their way into Palm’s rapidly expanding gaming catalogue is EA Mobile’s Tetris, Sudoku, and SCRABBLE, and Gameloft’s The Oregon Trail and Brain Challenge.

Another particular neat trick is the ability to integrate these games seamlessly into the webOS, so new texts coming in when you’re playing  a game will appear in the notification area, and games can be paused if you switch cards to respond.

These games have been made possible thanks to new capabilities offered by the Palm webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK) which provides the tools for creating graphics-intensive 3D gaming.  A public beta version of the webOS PDK is scheduled to be made available to all developers in March.

Check out the new games at www.palm.com/applications or take a shufti in the Palm App Catalog on your Palm Pre.

We haven’t got any promo videos yet, but here’s an old YouTube video showing the Need for Speed in action on a Pre. It may be a beta version but it certainly looks pretty slick already, so Pre owners should be in for a treat.
