Starbucks Cup Magic adds Augmented Reality, won't improve the coffee

As if going to Starbucks wasn’t a thrilling enough experience as it is, they’re now encouraging their smartphone-toting customers to wave their handsets around to enjoy an Augmented Reality app in the spirit of Christmas.

Hilarious!

The Starbucks Cup Magic app is set to launch for iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. next Monday, and uses augmented reality to virtually animate customer’s coffee cups and other items.

As well as coffee cups, there’s 47 other objects primed to respond to the app, providing endless dollops of thigh-slapping hilarious fun for all the family.

Just thinking about it has made us wet ourselves with an overdose of expectant festive joy.

Terminally bored customers can interact with virtual sprites, which include an ice skater, a squirrel, a boy and a dog sledding and a fox – and anyone managing to activate all five characters can win some yet to be announced prize.

If that wasn’t more fun than your little heart could possibly stand, you’re invited to share the hilarity with your lucky friends who will no-doubt be thrilled to receive an eCard commemorating the awesome time you’ve just had in Starbucks.

The point of all this is – according to Alexandra Wheeler, director of global marketing for Starbucks – to “surprise and delight” customers during the holiday season.

Go local

Personally, we suggest that you’d be more delighted supporting your local independent cafe, like some of the ones listed on our sister site.

There you can enjoy proper coffee and support a local independent store without any Herberts waving their expensive phones around.
