Nokia slings its loving arms around Windows Phone OS, job losses ahead

It’s been made official: Microsoft and Nokia have announced their plans to “form a broad strategic partnership that would use their complementary strengths and expertise to create a new global mobile ecosystem.”

What that means in English is that Nokia – still the world’s largest phone manufacturer, albeit with a fast vanishing user base – will adopt Windows Phone as its “principle smartphone strategy.”

The two mega-companies will also work together on marketing, search, social, maps, and development to try and create a smartphone platform that can compete with the runaway success of Android and iOS.

“Today, developers, operators and consumers want compelling mobile products, which include not only the device, but the software, services, applications and customer support that make a great experience,” orated Stephen Elop, Nokia President and CEO.

“Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It’s now a three-horse race.”

Sackings ahoy

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was asked what would happen to the large Finnish workforce and responded by saying that there will be “substantial reductions in employment” in Finland and around the world.

In the smartphone wars, there has to be casualties, and our hearts go out to Nokia workers around the world nervously waiting to find out if they’re due to be sacked…
