Netbooks have come a long way since the basic offerings of a few years back, and although the initial surge in sales may be relaxing slightly, they’re still very useful things and very much in demand.
With hundreds of different models now competing for your wallet, we’ve taken a look around at the very best and selected four netbooks which we think are in the current cream of the crop.

Rarely has a single tech company been associated with so many different takeover contenders, and fresh whispers of an imminent buy out today (Wednesday) saw mobile phone makers Palm’s stocks soar 20%.
Sparking the share price surge was a rumour that Chinese computer maker Lenovo was casting its beady eye over the company for a potential takeover bid.

It’s still under development and not expected out until the second half of this year, but Lenovo ‘s U1 Tablet/PC Hybrid has already got us a lot more excited than Apple’s frankly underwhelming iPad offering.
Showcased at CES earlier this month, the tablet packs everything you’d need from a fully functioning tablet PC – touchscreen, full multitasking, automatic screen orientation, 3G, Wi-Fi, onboard camera etc, but comes with a very clever twist: it can clip into a special shell to become a full Windows 7 laptop with a proper keyboard.

Say hello to Lenovo’s new Skylight netbook, the industry’s first ARM-based, Qualcomm smartbook, purring along on the freshly minted 1GHz Snapdragon processor (as seen in the Google Nexus One phone).
It’s a curious but attractive looking affair, but at least no one could accuse Lenovo of releasing a “me too” netbook, with the super-thin, shiny clamshell serving up a feast of curvy lines with the added bonus of an oddball attachable USB stick.

We have to admit we’re rather keen on Thinkpad laptops – heck, if they’re good enough for the Space Station, they’re good enough for us – so we’re rather looking forward to Lenovo’s new thin and light ultraportable Thinkpad x100e machines.
A little larger than your average netbook, the specs seem to be – as Leslie Phillips would say – ‘bang on’ with the diminutive laptop sporting a 11.1″ 1366 x 768 screen and AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 processor.
Purring along on either Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium or Pro (32 bit or 64 bit flavours), there’s capacity for up to 4GB of RAM, with storage being catered for by 2.5″ 5400rpm HDD drives coming in 160GB, 250GB or 320GB capacities.

A new study by warranty company SquareTrade analysed failure rates for over 30,000 new laptops covered by their plans, and found Asus and Toshiba to be the most reliable machines, with Sony not far behind in third place.
Worryingly, one in three of all laptops failed within 3 years, with SquareTrade discovering that netbooks were 20% more unreliable than regular laptops.

Lenovo have announced the availability of their snazzy new range of IdeaCenter Q110 nettop machines in the States.

Powered by NVIDIA’s Ion platform, the Q110 measures up at just six inches wide, 0.8 inches deep and 6.8 inches high and looks – as we’d say in Wales – well lush, with both the silver and black patterned glossy finishes cutting a considerable dash to our eyes.
Designed to be used in the office, living room or bedroom, the book-sized nettops come with Windows Vista Home Premium 64 installed (or Windows 7 on free upgrade, when it becomes available), with the package offering 2GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive for $399 (currently around £250).
