As expected, Amazon has announced the launch of its new on-device and Web-based Android application hub, known as the Amazon Appstore, warmly welcomed by Apple who immediately launched a legal challenge over the name.
Set up to stare across the street in deadly rivalry with Google’s own Android Market, Amazon’s own Appstore serves up a wide range of Android games and applications, listed by category, most popular free/paid, new releases and ‘Movers and Shakers’ which lists, “the biggest gainers in Appstore for Android sales rank over the past 24 hours.”
Amazon are hoping to make a big splash at launch with the the exclusive availability of Rovio’s new app, Angry Birds Rio, which is being offered for free for a limited time.
The company are also bigging up their innovative feature called “Test Drive” which lets potential purchasers test apps on a simulated Android phone on their PCs, using their mouse as controls.
“The Android platform’s openness provides a great opportunity to reach new customers,” purred an on-message, synergistic Rovio CEO Mikael Hed.

Customers can shop in the Amazon Appstore from any computer using a Web browser. They can also access the Amazon Appstore directly on their Android phones or tablets, once they’ve installed the Amazon Appstore application.
