Wales becomes the UK’s first digital nation. Says ‘hwyl’ to analogue

When they’re not busy fighting battalions of Russian hooligans in far-flung car parks, the Welsh will soon be enjoying their new status as the UK’s first digital TV nation.

The country’s switchover from analogue to digital began in Swansea last August, with the city becoming the first fully digital city in the country.

Mid Wales and the land of the Gogs followed, with the south east the last in line to be converted.

Lights out

Tomorrow, the Wenvoe transmitter and its 75 relay stations – covering the major conurbations of Cardiff, Newport, Monmouth, Merthyr Tydfil, Brecon and Rhondda Cynon Taf – will be switched to digital, banishing analogue transmissions of BBC One, ITV1 and S4C forever.

The absolute last place in Wales to be able to view analogue will be Tonyrefail in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and any Taffies who haven’t already bagged themselves a digital receiver will be looking at a dim screenio from Wednesday night.
