The Samsung Galaxy S2 remains our favourite smartphone of the year, delivering handsomely in every department except one: the annoying camera noises which can not be turned off.

It drove us mad for weeks until we finally found a way of finally silencing the thing – without the need to fiddle about rooting the phone.

For a compact camera, we were very impressed with the output of the LX5. Its new 10.1 MP sensor delivered distinictive improvements over its predecessor, with an enhanced dynamic range controlling burnt out highlights and more shadow detail being visible.

We loved the Panasonic Lumix LX3 high-end compact camera so much that we made it our high end compact camera of the year in 2009, and when its successor, the LX5 was announced, we found ourselves being tempted again.

This time around the competition has heated up, with an array of equally seductive high end compacts providing tempting alternatives (in particular the Canon S95, which we nearly bought) – so can the LX5 still cut it as the best of the lot?

As any fule knows, digital camera image quality has never been purely been about piling on the megapixels, with other factors such as sensor quality, sensor size and the all-important optics all playing a part.

The iPhone comes with a fairly rubbish camera, and there’s no shortage of camera apps promising to improve things for frustrated snappers, like CrowdCafe’s 7.0 Megapixel Camera app.

Considerably smaller than its chunkier and more expensive brother, the Canon G11, the S90 serves up a very similar prosumer-orientated  feature set, offering program AE, aperture-priority, shutter-priority and manual modes – as well as the ability to shoot RAW files for the best image quality.
