In an unexpected twist, Nokia has announced a new partnership with Intel, with the two companies combining their fledging Linux-based OSs into a single package called MeeGo.
Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin OS will now be merged to create a “software platform that will support multiple hardware architectures across the broadest range of device segments, including pocketable mobile computers, netbooks, tablets, mediaphones, connected TVs and in-vehicle infotainment systems.”

An updated version of the Skyfire web browser has been released for Symbian S60 3rd and 5th edition smartphones.
The free app claims to bring a PC-like browsing experience to mobile devices, with the latest version adding full support for high-resolution screens, an updated, finger-friendly user interface (UI), crisper text, smoother zooming with kinetic movement, and a full-screen mode that maximises screen real estate.

While we’ll be the first to agree that the iPhone is probably the best bet for gamers, it was argued that when it comes to everyday, useful apps, several platforms offer equally good ranges of applications, with some having strengths over the iPhone’s offerings.

Telecoms firm Orange has launched its vrey own App Shop, which is available now for over-the-air downloads to around one million customers in the UK and France.
The App Shop serves up a total of 5,000 applications, games, ringtones and wallpapers (we’re not sure how that’s broken down in terms of apps) – a figure that will no doubt grow swiftly.

The Nokia X6 should be shimmying on to UK shop shelves right now, with the music phone available on the Orange network from Friday.
Boasting a beefy 35 hours of music playback, the handset packs 32GB of onboard memory and comes with, err, Nokia’s Comes with Music service Comes with Music which offers unlimited access to over 6 million tracks from the Nokia Music Store.

Hot out of Nokia’s busy factories and set to launch in the first quarter of next year is two new entry level 3G sliders, the Nokia 6700 slide and Nokia 7230.
The Symbian-powered Nokia 6700 slider comes with a fairly nifty feature set for a budget jobbie, boasting a not-to-be-sniffed-at 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash and popsh Carl Zeiss optics.
There’s also 2.2 inch QVGA display, HSDPA/HSUPA connectivity, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, an FM radio and microSD expansion slot onboard.

We wrote about Swype’s innovative text input system yesterday, and were pretty impressed by the demo posted.
The tech website TechCrunch have now posted up a leaked video showing a face-off type-off between a Samsung Omnia II handset equipped with the Swype software and someone bashing away on a regular iPhone onscreen keyboard.

Spotify has tooted on its PR horn and trumpeted the news that its mobile phone app is now available on the Symbian platform, letting zillions of users on Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung handsets gorge themselves on their music streaming service.
Like the iPhone and Android versions, the Symbian version serves up unlimited music streaming, so long as users are shelling out a tenner a month for the premium account and they’re on a fixed data plan offering WiFi or 2.5/3G Internet access.

According to tech analysts Gartner, Android phones will be more popular than iPhones by 2012, with the Google mobile operating system becoming the second-largest smartphone platform on the planet.
Although the mobile OS currently trails a considerable distance behind the all-conquering iPhone, Gartner spoddy dude Ken Dulaney reckons it’ll climb to grab 14.5 percent of the market by the end of 2012, with estimated sales of 76 million phones sold in that year.

The successor to Nokia’s popular E71 business handset is currently taxiing on the runway ready to beguile besuited types across the land.
The new Nokia E72 is now listed for pre-order on the Nokia site for £359, with colour options being black, black or black, with no definite release date as yet announced.
We’ve always rather liked the no-nonsense lines of the Nokia E series, and the specs aren’t too shabby either, with the handset sporting a 5MP camera (with LED flash), a 3.5mm headphone jack and an optical trackpad for zipping through those important business messages at a whizzy pace.

Natty little app Tweeter Mobile is now available to download for free. The website says limited time only so pop over and have a play. We’re rather liking the nifty map feature than takes you on a tweeting tour around the world!
Tweeter Mobile™ is currently available on Sony Ericsson and Nokia S60 240×320 devices, however we plan to support Nokia S40, Samsung, LG, Motorola, BlackBerry and Touch Screen devices in the near future.
