Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 Micro Four Thirds touchscreen camera

Panasonic has flapped out the spec sheets of its new Lumix Micro Four Thirds cameras – the touchscreen DMC-G2 – and we’re rather liking the look of what we’re seeing.

The direct descendant of the trailblazing Lumix G1, the DMC-G2 comes with a 12.1MP Live MOS sensor and shoots 720p video in AVCHD lite, and can lay claim to being the first interchangeable lens system camera with a fold-out touchscreen.

Panasonic 'leaks' G2 and G10 touchscreen Micro Four Thirds cameras
Appearing on their website long enough to be snaffled by sharp-eyed speedy bloggers are a set of photos and some details of  Panasonic’s  upcoming Lumix G2 and G10 Micro Four Thirds cameras .

Although it’s not clear whether these are the final products or ‘work in progress’ prototypes, both cameras are said to pack a 12.1 megapixel sensor and lots of touchy-feely stuff in the shape of a touchscreen with touch shutter and touch MF Assist.

Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate, England: Panasonic Lumix GF-1 and LX3

February 19th, 2010 7:36pm mike s 1 comment

Photos of Margate harbour, beach, old town, promenade and street signs, November, 2009

As it’s a Friday, we thought we’d share some photos from our sister site, urban75.

Here’s a selection from a winter weekend at the faded seaside resorts of Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate, on the south east coast of England.

For the trip, we decided to leave our dSLR at home for the first time, and take along our two favourite compact cameras, the Panasonic Lumix GF-1 and Panasonic  Lumix LX3.

Panasonic Lumix LX3: #1 Best High End Compact of 2009

It may strange to see a camera released well over a year ago sitting at the top of our Best High End Compacts list, but we think the Lumix LX3 still offers an unsurpassed set of features in a beautifully elegant package.

Panasonic firmware update for Lumix DMC-GF1 and lenses

We raved and we frothed over Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-GF1 camera, before eventually caving in and buying a GF1/20mm f1.7 lens recently, so it’s good to see firmware updates coming through.

Panasonic Lumix GF-1 camera – a few snaps

November 23rd, 2009 10:30am mike s No comments

Panasonic Lumix GF-1 camera - a few snaps If you’ve been reading this site you’ll know that we’ve been lusting over a Panasonic Lumix GF-1 camera for some considerable time – and we’ve finally got our hands on one!

We took the Panasonic Lumix GF-1 / 20mm f1.7 lens combo for a wander around London over the weekend and have included a few photos below – all more or less straight out of the camera, with no post production.

Our initial feeling is that the camera is living up to its promise, delivering excellent quality images in a delightfully compact and tough package. We’re still feeling the love!

Expect a full review soon.

Panasonic Lumix GF1 dSLR sends us wild with desire

Panasonic Lumix GF1 dSLR: we fill with desire

Olympus created a bit of a splash with the launch of their beautifully retro-styled E-P1 Micro Four Thirds camera, but as soon as we cast eyes on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1, we were filled with rampant wads o’want.

Looking like a grown up version of the Lumix LX3 – still our favourite digital compact – the GF1 offers dSLR-like performance in a compact package (we would say ‘pocket-sized’, but if you like to strut around in a pair 0f Rod Stewart’s finest spandex trews, it’ll be a bit of a squeeze).

Leica X1 gets hands-on preview

Leica X1 gets hands-on preview

Our favourite photography site DPreview has posted an early hands-on preview of Leica’s new ‘entry level’ compact camera.

Of course, Leica’s notion of  ‘entry level’ equates to most people’s idea of ‘ruddy expensive,’ (we’re talking £1,320 here) but there’s no denying the seductive lines of the new camera, or the drooling brought on by that little red logo.

Lumix LX3 firmware update: bad news

Judging by the traffic to our article, a lot of people here  (including ourselves) must have downloaded the v2.0 firmware update for the Lumix LX3 camera – so here’s some bad news.

Lumix have just announced that they’ve suspended the availability of the download until ‘reliability issues’ have been addressed. They’re also suggesting that users who have installed the update, reset their cameras.

Panasonic Lumix LX3 – long term review

September 15th, 2009 8:42pm mike s 1 comment

Panasonic Lumix LX3 Digital High End Compact Camera ReviewPanasonic’s flagship digital compact for mustard-keen photographers and compulsive shutter clickers, the Lumix DMC-LX3 offers up a tempting package.

First reviewed back in February 2009, we’re still using the camera every day and it remains our first choice recommendation for any photo enthusiast looking for a fast and compact street-shooter.

The basics
Lurking within the LX3’s bijou lines is an 10.1 Megapixel resolution sensor, flash hotshoe, full auto and manual controls and an optically stabilised, bright 2.5x optical wide angle zoom with the drool-inducing LEICA name.

The LX3 improves on its predecessor by extending the focal coverage to an impressively wide 24mm coverage, giving the lens a zoom range of 24mm-60mm – not particularly good for twitchers, sports aficionados and fans of Small Things That Shuffle Around Miles From The Camera, but great for street shooters and landscape photographers.

The lens is pleasingly fast too, boasting a bright maximum aperture of f2.0-2.8, giving it at least a stop advantage over most of its rivals and delivering improved performance in low light.

The Lumix LX3 packs a mighty array of manual controls, offering full control over aperture, shutter and focus settings, backed by RAW shooting and HD movie recording in the 720p format.
