That roaring sound you’re hearing is the noise of a jet assisted Android rocketing past iPhones and Blackberry handsets as the Google OS becomes the top selling operating system in US smartphones.

After months of leaks, RIM has officially announced their all new BlackBerry 6 operating system.
The new mobile OS serves up a host of updates, a ”visual, fluid interface’ and a monstrously overdue decent web browser in the shape of a WebKit-based number, packing support for HTML5.

RIM have officially announced their latest smartphone, the BlackBerry Torch 9800, and smothered on the love describing it as their “best BlackBerry ever.”

Android smartphones continue to soar in popularity, with a new report showing that worldwide shipments have jumped an incredible 886 per cent year-on-year from the second quarter of 2009.

We have to say we weren’t too impressed by Apple dragging other handset manufacturers into their press conference yesterday – the issue was about the iPhone 4 dropping calls, not the performance of their competitors’ phones – and both Nokia and RIM have responded angrily.

The Blackberry-producing gang at RIM seems hell bent on teasing us with fleeting glimpses of their upcoming BlackBerry 6 OS, as a second promo video slips out of dock.

Android is still proving to be a hot potato in the States, gaining on all the major smartphone platforms, with their market share soaring from 9 per cent of all U.S. smartphone users in February up to 13 percent in May.
The location-based social networking service Foursquare has announced that it’s cruised past the landmark figure of one million check-ins during a single day.

Research In Motion (RIM) – makers of the Blackberry line of handsets – broke a company record yesterday as it shipped no less than 11.2 million BlackBerries in the last quarter – adding up to a 43 percent increase over the sales for the same period last year.

Newcomers to the smartphone world may think that Apple invented the whole mobile app downloading thing, but it had in fact been going on for years – and thrives on other platforms too.
Of course when it comes to the sheer number of the apps available, Apple rules the roost with its store bulging with zillions of apps, but with smartphones predicted to overtake feature phones in the U.S. by 2011, it’s a burgeoning market on all platforms.

We posted up a wobbly video of BlackBerry’s forthcoming Bold 9800 slider a few weeks ago, and the handset from RIM is now (literally) becoming a bit clearer, thanks to a set of leaked photos.

Stats back from the first quarter of this year show Android accelerating past past Apple for the OS for the number-two position in the US.
The data comes from the NPD Group’s Mobile Phone Track and reflects the continuing growth of the open source OS (although Apple have since disputed these figures – see below).
It’s the briefest of videos- a mere, tantalising 14 seconds long – a half-decent eyeful of the eagerly awaited Blackberry Bold slider phone has been shunted on to YouTube.
Running the snazzy new Blackberry 6 operating system, the video shows off their new slim slider phone, sporting a brightly backlit QWERTY keyboard.

Man, those cats at Blackberry are laying down a heavy urban vibe, with their new all-dancing video showing that the company is no longer all about corporate suits, swivelling chairs, offices and appointments.
To prove that their new OS is funkier than an iPhone in a catsuit and rollerblades, Blackberry’s new promo video grooves along to an autotune-powered ‘Boom Boom Pow’ soundtrack from the Black Eyed Peas.
