Foursquare has just stumped up some fairly staggering stats showing off their massive growth over 2010, with the company notching up 6 million registered users, while growing 3,400 percent in terms of check-ins.

Although Google apparently waved a $550m wad in the direction of Yelp last year, they found themselves turned down by the local search, social networking and user review site.
That decision may prove to be a bit of a whoopsie for Yelp, seeing as Google has just charged straight into the heart of their core business with the release of Google Places, which comes bundled with Google Maps for mobile v4.4.

It’s proved a hit on the iPhone (mainly in the States), and now the doodz at Gowalla are hurling their popular location-based social networking game in the direction of the Android community.
Joining Google Buzz, Foursquare and all the other location based services hustlin’ and a-bustlin’ to grab the biggest slice of this growing, err, pie, Gowalla’s new beta Android-optimised site can be found at m.gowalla.com.

A new website called PleaseRobMe.com has been created to warn users about the potential perils of using services like Foursquare, Twitter and GoogleBuzz, which let users share their location online and ‘check in’ to places.
By aggregating all those publicly announced check-ins, the site serves up a handy list of people who have left their home and checked in elsewhere, ramming home the point that such information may prove invaluable to burglars.

There’s already been versions made available for the iPhone, Android phones and BlackBerry (in beta), and now Palm webOS users can install their own app and get stuck into the location-sharing service Foursquare.
The beta version works on Palm Pre and Palm Pixi phones, and offers a more practical alternative to trying to access the Foursquare site via the handset’s web browser (every time we tried we got parsing errors and pages that wouldn’t load).
