Amazon Kindle comes to the UK with built in Wi-Fi/3GAmazon’s latest Kindle eBook reader is heading to the UK and will feature Wi-Fi, a new browser, an improved PDF reader with dictionary look-up plus note-taking and highlighting.

The first Kindle to be sold directly to Brits finally offers Wi-Fi access as well as a free 3G connection, and comes with Amazon’s “experimental” browser based on WebKit, which also powers  Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari desktop browsers.

Apple iBooks gets updated to 1.1.1

Apple’s iBooks is a slick app for for downloading and viewing books on your iPhone, with books selected from a virtual bookshelf and browsable with a swipe or a tap.

It’s long been one of our favourite iPhone apps, so we’re pleased to see it getting a bit of TLC from Apple and emerging with a shiny new v1.1.1 label.

E-Reader users a well happy bunch with satisfaction levels hitting 93%It seems that users of the current batch of eReaders are a very happy lot indeed, with new research by the NPD Group finding that almost all e-reader owners are either “very satisfied” or “somewhat satisfied” with their devices.

The report found satisfaction levels running at a hefty 93 per cent, with just 2 per cent of owners declaring themselves dissatisfied with their eReader.

iRiver Story eBook reader gets reviewedAmazon’s Kindle eBook reader may well be the soar-away success story in the States, but over here in Blighty we’re well behind the e-pack, with new models taking an eternity to make it across the pond.

Keen to slip in between the gap and notch up a few swift sales is iRiver’s Story eBook reader, which offers a 6 inch screen, built-in speaker, voice recorder, 2GB of integrated storage, a 3.5mm headphone socket and diary and memo features.

There’s no doubting that the Story been seriously ‘influenced’ by the Kindle, with the reader sporting a similar matte white finish and integrated keyboard, although it can’t match the build quality or general sleekness of its inspiration.

Spring Design introduces Alex: a dual-screen Android-based e-readerIt’s certainly a bit of an odd looking thing – part Lifeguard surfboard, part dinner tray – but say hello to Alex, the dual-screen e-book reader from Spring Design.

Bearing design similarities to the Barnes and Noble eReader tipped to be unveiled tomorrow in the US, the Alex comes with a primary 6-inch E-ink EPD (electronic paper display) backed by a 3.5-inch full colour LCD screen running Google’s Android OS.

Amazon Kindle gets half-arsed UK release

Amazon announces half-arsed Kindle release for the UKUs Brits have been waiting an eternity to grab a slice of the Kindle eBook action, and Amazon have finally announced UK availability for the iconic electronic book reader.

Well, sort of. The Kindle International Version is indeed offered on Amazon’s UK site, but you can’t actually buy it there – instead, you’ll have to head off to the Amazon.com site and then shell out extra for overseas postage and  ‘customs duties, import taxes and other fees’ on top of the $279 asking price.

Being a US machine, you’ll also need a US to UK power adapter to hand (the tightwads don’t include one), or you’ll be stuck with charging over USB only.
